Shopaholics Are Meant to Change the World. I'm convinced.

Research shows that people who overspend have a gap in their lives. My hope is to help more people fill it.

As you may or may not know, I made a name for myself in the minimalist/recovering shopaholic space on TikTok after sharing my journey of downsizing my life. For years I have tried to talk about shopping addiction the way every other vanilla, boring person might. This isn’t a slight at anyone other than myself, BTW. For some reason, I can’t seem to shake the belief that vanilla is the best and safest way to live your life. You know - don’t stand out and you can’t get hurt? Actually, I just had about 72 different childhood flashbacks that reminded me of exactly why I believe this.

I’ve lost my point…

Over the last eleven years, I have worked to focus less on the things outside of myself. I’ve done this in order to intentionally turn inward so that I could have a better understanding of who exactly is operating this meat machine I’m walking around in.

I’ve also studied topics like: debt payoff, investing, money, money mindset, manifestation, marketing, small business, psychology, self help, spirituality, and so much more.

What I found was that my brain began piling tid bits of information from each of these topics and compiling a course that could be used to help shopping addicts recover from their overspending struggles. I named it Shopping Rehab, naturally.

The Shopaholic Gap

In all of this accidental research, I have been able to pool together my thoughts on why people overspend and it all boils down to one thing. The Gap.

No, not like The Gap, like the clothing store that keeps making wearing all denim a new trend every 10 years. There’s this other gap…

This gap between who we see ourselves to be and who we want to be.

The moment I learned about this gap, it gave me an image in my mind that felt like the perfect metaphor for what it truly felt like to have a shopping addiction. God bless AI’s artificial little heart, I fought with it for a good 15 minutes an an attempt to churn out this image for you.

You see, I realized that when we feel far away or detached from the person we want to be, we attempt to fill the void with the stuff we buy. However, we do it to our own detriment.

What I’ve begun to realize is that if more shopaholics found a way to slow their desire to fill the gap with stuff, the gap could be bridged. If the gap can be bridged, then more men and women become capable of being the stronger, healthier versions of themselves. If more men and women become the stronger, healthier version of themselves…they just might become unstoppable.

So, I think I have a plan…
